Five things I would have wanted to know before coming to university

by Sorel Patricia

Body:

There are things that we would’ve liked to know before going into a new environment and these ones would have helped me live my experience differently at Laurentian:

Adjusting to the weather

It's COLD in Sudbury: You're probably thinking that it's cold in Canada in general and it should not be surprising. Let’s say it's not the same intensity as elsewhere, it's worse.

A bilingual institution!

Many people speak French at Laurentian: We tend to always speak English so that people understand even if it is not our first language and we have difficulties. Unfortunately, this is wrong because there are a lot of bilingual people on campus even if they do not show it, and if you feel more comfortable speaking French, it's better to speak French first to be sure that the person really does not understand. Worst case they will learn French to be able to understand you as you learn English.

Get fit!

There are a lot of activities on campus: yoga, zumba, HIIT cardio, and you will probably not know if you don’t ask.

Shopping options

There are not many stores in Sudbury: If you don’t like shopping online, it would be best to do all your shopping before coming so that you don’t run out of clothes before an important occasion.

Go for a walk!

We walk a lot outside: Have your coat and boots ready because you will always have to walk outside.

I hope these tips will help you!
