Dear Laurentian University community,
We are writing to share an update on the assessment of the Jeno Tihanyi Pool. Our Facilities Department has continued working diligently with our consultant, JL Richards, as well as specialist firms to further understand the investment required to reopen the pool.
Early this fall, we received a report from Xradar, a firm specializing in concrete scanning. We have reviewed the findings of the report outlining the condition of the pool’s infrastructure. In short, the concrete forming the floor of the pool requires significant remediation. We have requested that JL Richards prepare a Repair Options Report along with cost estimates for the repairs. Based on JL Richards’ recommendation, we will also request further scans of the pool walls by Xradar to inform the Repair Options Report. These scans are now scheduled for late November, which is the next available time for Xradar.
We want to be able to repair the pool in a way that allows it to stay open for decades to come, rather than take temporary measures towards an expedited reopening. We appreciate your understanding and patience through this process. We will provide another update no later than December 20, 2023.
Thank you, merci, miigwech
