Earth Day Climate March

United Nations Decade of Restoration Event at Laurentian University.

(April 22, 2022) - Laurentian University’s Environmental Sustainability Committee, the Indigenous Student Circle, and the Students’ General Association invite you to join the Earth Day Climate March on April 22nd, 2022, starting at 1 pm on campus as part of year two events for the United Nations Decade of Restoration.

The march will begin in the centre of the Laurentian campus, at the start of the recently opened UN Restoration Trail. It then moves through the University's carbon offset forest, part of Sudbury's 10 million planted trees and will visit the Indigenous Sharing and Learning Center where Elder Lorny Bob will share an Earth teaching. From there, the march will proceed to the Laurentian beach, where further knowledge sharing on restoring local water and watersheds will occur and where a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.  Everyone is welcome to join the walk. As parking is limited (paid parking only): please consider taking public transportation, carpooling, biking or walking. The march is estimated to take 60 minutes and conclude at Laurentian Beach.

We invite all community members (families, kids, pets) to join us in marching in support of climate action and UN restoration goals.

About the UN Decade of Restoration: Launched by the United Nations General Assembly, the U.N. Decade of Ecosystem Restoration is an initiative that aims to support global efforts to protect and restore ecosystems and halt climate change.

About the Environmental Sustainability Committee: The ESC is committed to working towards carbon neutrality and completion of extensive restoration of Laurentian University’s campus and its lakes by 2030. We want to help Canada, Sudbury, and Laurentian University in the restoration of our land and water in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Dibendaagziwin Committee: As Laurentian University is situated on the land of the Anishnaabe people, a university wide land and water caring committee led by Anishnaabe people and supported by university allies has been formally established on this Earth Day, April 22, 2022. The Dibendaagziwin (We Belong to the Land) Committee, has the full support of Laurentian University and the Executive Team, this committee is established to action recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Task Force Report. We will be having our first meeting in the upcoming weeks and we look forward to working with community partners and allies to address climate change through land and water teaching, restoration and care.
