Eduard Guerra
Biography
Eduard is a graduate of Laurentian's Engineering program (Extractive Metallurgical Engineering, 1993). He obtained M.A.Sc. (1997) and Ph.D. (2003) degrees from the University of British Columbia in the Department of Metals and Materials Engineering. Prior to joining the faculty of the Bharti School of Engineering and Computational Science he worked for several years in industrial research and operations.

Research
Dr. Guerra's field of expertise can be broadly categorized as Extractive Metallurgy. He is primarily interested in reducing the energy requirements and environmental impacts of mineral processing and metal production. Currently, he is supervising the development of an electrolytic method to destroy cyanide from gold mill effluents as an alternative to standard industrial processes that use chemical additives. He recently oversaw the invention of a relatively energy efficient technology for ore comminution that also reduces the amount of waste ore generated. Another notable past project led to the development (and patenting) of a technology to produce activated carbon coated polystyrene beads as an alternative to the pure activated carbon particles that are commonly employed in gold cyanidation plants. Other past research projects included the study of solid catalysts in pressure oxidation of sulfide minerals as well as the use of relatively non-toxic additives to improve the performance of thiosulfate leaching of gold.
