Recreational to Therapeutic Adventure

This course is designed to introduce the student to the broad spectrum of outdoor adventure from pure recreational experiences to more complex interventions with therapeutic outcomes. More advanced concepts in outdoor facilitation will be introduced, which will provide the student with specialized perspectives on corporate adventure training, the application of adventure therapy techniques and an overview of adventure therapy within special population. These concepts will be examined from both a theoretical and a practical perspective through role playing and scenarios. Several industry associations and organization will be examined in terms of their unique approaches to adventure therapy and outdoor recreation. Experiential learning exercises will be used to enhance the learning experience through practical "hands-on" facilitation. Upon completion of the course students will be expected to demonstrate techniques for effective facilitation and understand the basic tenets of adventure therapy in its varied applications.
