Coastal Ocean Conservation

This course examines the complex relationships between humans and the Earth's oceans by focusing on the areas of primary contact, the coasts. Aquiculture, fishing, oil and gas extraction, alternative energy harvesting, shipping, contaminant release, and dumping of trash all are examined within the nearshore, exclusive economic zones. The course material includes ecology, policy, and economics, and also features the role of Canada's First Nations as many are affected by coastal problems and may also stand to benefit from sustainable coastal economic development. Pre-req: 60 credits, with a minimum of 6 credits in either ENVI or ENSC. (lec 3, lab 3) cr 3.
