Local Golf Star Shining on Provincial Level
Back in 2019, Alex Fowke was a first-year Sports Administration student at Laurentian trying to figure out his hockey career. He thought he would play somewhere in the Canadian Hockey League, maybe with the Rayside-Balfour Canadians or the British Columbia Hockey League. It ended up being none of the above.
Four years later, Alex Fowke is now a LU golf team member with two years of NCAA experience under his belt.
The fourth-year Bachelor of Business Administration student decided to turn his favourite summer hobby into his number 1 sport. From there, he was able to sign with a junior college in Texas. After a year there, he garnered enough attention to transfer to the University of Seattle, competing in the top level of postsecondary golf.
After two years of living south of the border, Alex decided to return to Sudbury and join his sister, Mackenzie and his brother Ben on the LU Golf teams. The opportunity to finish his degree north of the border and play with his younger brother Ben drew Alex to come back home.
Alex describes his brother Ben as one of the best golf talents to ever come out of Sudbury. The competitiveness between the two pushes each other to be the best version of themselves. The internal battle helped LU win the McMaster Invitational, with both brothers finishing in the top four score-wise in the whole tournament. Alex shot a 71 and beat his younger brother, who put forward a 74 to help the Voyageurs win the contest by a 10-stroke margin. Even with the win, the younger Fowke wasn’t happy with getting beat by his brother.
Backed by the Fowke brothers, the LU Golf team is looking to do something they have never done before — win an OUA title and qualify for nationals in the spring.
