This edition of the President’s Update has been written by Associate Vice-President, Academic of and Indigenous Programs, Dr. Susan Manitowabi.

Aanii, Hello, Bonjour

Today, we commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is a day where individuals are encouraged to take the time to reflect on what they know of the history of Indigenous Peoples. Reflecting our thoughts on what Indigenous Peoples have experienced in the past, what today’s experiences hold, and what we may do to shape a better future.

To help with these reflections, consider reading through many of the profiles that have been written on Indigenous graduates, students, and faculty members. Each of their unique journeys represent a reflection of the Laurentian University community and the experience of Indigenous people.

Our team within Indigenous Student Affairs has organized events and activities for you to participate in and learn more about Indigenous experiences. Last week, we held an exhibit within the Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre (ISLC) on Dr. Peter Henderson Bryce. He was a medical officer with the Department of Indian Affairs, who reported on the high number of deaths of First Nation children at Residential Schools in the early 1900s.
On June 21st, and the 5th anniversary of the Indigneous Sharing and Learning Centre, at 9:00 AM we will welcome all to join us outside the ISLC as we plant a cedar tree, which will complete the four medicines around the outdoor fire. From there, we will walk down to the Apology Cairn within Lot 15 for a meaningful ceremony, recognizing its significance and the work ahead.

Additionally, all are welcome to join us on campus today June 20th at 10:00 AM to plant a batch of 1,000 seedlings through the Dibendaagziwin Committee (we belong to the land). This tree planting takes place in partnership with the City of Greater Sudbury, who have donated the seedlings.
For those in the Sudbury Community, all are welcome to participate in the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre event, which will feature Laurentian graduate and member of the Indigenous Student Affairs team, Paskwa Lightning.

Thank you, Miigwech, Merci
