The Language Institute helps students improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. For students looking to study at Laurentian, our ESL and EAP programs offer language training before the start of your degree. Our University Preparation program allows students to earn credits while refining their academic language skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL): The ESL Program has two levels: ESL Level 1 and ESL Leve 2. Each ESL level is 13 weeks long and students receive 21 hours of in-class instruction per week. One-on-one tutoring sessions through our Tutor Assistance Program (TAP) is available. Upon completion of ESL Level 2, students can transition into the English for Academic Preparation Program (EAP) Level 1.
English for Academic Preparation (EAP): The EAP Program has three levels: EAP Level 1, EAP Level 2, and EAP Level 3. Each EAP level is 13 weeks long and students receive 21 hours of in-class instruction per week. One-on-one tutoring sessions through our Tutor Assistance Program (TAP) is available. Students who successfully complete Level 3 with a final grade of 70% or higher can study full-time in their academic program. Students in EAP Level 3 who achieve a final grade between 66%-69% can proceed into the University Preparation (UP) Program.
University Preparation (UP): The UP Program is an academic bridging program. UP is 13 weeks long with 16 hours of in-class instruction per week with additional workshops. Students can take a maximum of two three-credit Laurentian undergraduate courses. Students who successfully complete the UP Program have met the language requirements and can proceed to full-time university studies.
All new international students who do not meet the English language requirements (TOEFL 88 ibt or IELTS 6.5) for direct admission at Laurentian University are required to study English at the Language Institute (LI) prior to commencing full-time studies in an undergraduate or graduate program.
Prior to the start of each semester, all new students who do not present a standardized test score (IELTS or TOEFL) are required to complete the Language Institute Placement Test. This English language proficiency test assesses listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Upon completion of the test, students will then be placed in the appropriate level based on their overall test results.
