STAYING ORGANIZED AND PRODUCTIVE WHEN LEARNING REMOTELY:

  • Schedule your virtual meetings in your favourite digital calendar and include the online meeting link.
  • Set a reminder before the start of remote lectures or Zoom classes.
  • Block off time in your calendar to complete tasks and set reminders for deadlines.
  • Schedule in break times so you don’t get overwhelmed.
  • Relieve stress and reset your focus by exercising regularly.
  • Make sure that your workspace is ergonomically optimized to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and eye strain. Here are some helpful ergonomic tips as well as an an ergonomic assessment tool: Government of Ontario Computer Ergonomics https://www.ccohs.ca/healthyworkplaces/

As many courses for Fall 2020 and Fall/Winter 2020 will be delivered by remote delivery, it is important for students to understand how to use online learning technology as well as how to make the best of use of it.  The protection of security and privacy for themselves and others is also paramount.

Laurentian University has developed best practices and protocols to support you in your remote learning success.

Library and Archives: Information for Students - Fall 2020

  • The gateway to library and archival resources and services continues to be the Library and Archives homepage, which also has a COVID-19 FAQ that is regularly updated; every student should bookmark it.
  • Students are encouraged to consult the various disciplinary Research Guides accessible through the Library and Archives homepage.
  • The library Research Skills Tutorial on D2L remains available.
  • Librarians are available to provide research help by e-mail or by appointment by telephone or Zoom, and the Ask the Library online chat research help service will be available as normal.
  • As COVID-19 safety controls may allow at Laurentian and at other universities, the RACER inter-library loan and document delivery service will gradually return to operation, with online journal articles being more easily obtainable than other kinds of documents in the nearer term.
  • The Library and Archives will provide access to physical books in its collections, whether through the ability to borrow them or through special temporary access to online versions.
  • Lending of physical books will first occur on a curbside pickup basis (i.e., retrieval of pre-requested books at the building door), possibly from mid-summer, and later, as COVID-19 safety controls may allow, at the service counters of the Desmarais and Architecture libraries.
  • Onsite consultation of physical library resources and use of some library study spaces will occur in the fall as COVID-19 safety controls may allow.
  • As COVID-19 safety controls may allow, the Library and Archives will recall borrowed books whose original due dates fall before the recall date, assisting with postal returns for distant borrowers; until such a recall, overdue charges remain suspended.
  • In addition to the Research Skills tutorial, librarians will be providing two video workshops, the first on Searching Database and Google Scholar, and the second on installing the Zotero citation manager to capture and use references in a paper. Students who successfully complete one or both of these workshops will be issued a certificate of completion by a librarian.
  • Using Zoom, librarians are also pleased to provide customized online library research workshops for individual classes at the request of course instructors.
  • Limited access to the Archives for research using archival fonds will be available by appointment; reference services by e-mail remain available.
