The Romance of Nation Building: Foundational Fictions in Nineteenth Century Spanish America

This course examines major 19th-century novels that helped forge emergent national identities in the new nation-states of post-Independence Spanish America. Selected readings from novels by Alberto Blest Gana, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Rómulo Gallegos are supplemented by critical texts by Doris Sommers, Benedict Anderson, and others. Students may not retain credit for both ESPA 4426 and ESPA 3426. Prerequisite: ESPA 3005 NL. This course may be taken concurrently. Sem. 3 cr
