This course covers the basic concepts of radioactivity, the elements and their stability, the interaction of radiation with matter, the dose concept, and how radioelements are cycled in nature. Specific topics include: forms of radioactivity, the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs), cosmogenic radiation, and natural reactors. The course also considers human activities affecting natural radioactivity including the use of radioactive materials in the health sector and consumer products, mining and mine tailings, nuclear energy, waste disposal, plus accidents and spills. PREREQ: a minimum of 54 credits overall including at least 6 cr of CHMI, GEOL, PHYS or ENSC/ENVI. (lec 3) cr 3.
