Ways Laurentian University is Working to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

Laurentian continues to follow guidance from Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD)

Vaccine Mandate

  • With the strong recommendation and support of PHSD, Laurentian is requiring all University Employees, Contractors (and their employees), Sub-contractors (and their employees), Students and Visitors to be vaccinated. Additional support will be provided on a case-by-case basis to students who are not able to be vaccinated and require an accommodation.
    • When you come to campus this fall, those around you will have attested that they are either fully (or on the path to becoming fully) vaccinated or they are participating in the weekly rapid screening program.
  • In collaboration with PHSD, Laurentan is providing the opportunity to be vaccinated on campus. Faculty, staff, students, and community members who may still need a first or second dose can get vaccinated by:

Physical distance when required

  • Laurentian continues to implement 2 meter distance requirements where possible, as directed by PHSD.
  • Laurentian is also making changes to the classroom. Seating capacity will be limited to 80% of traditional occupancy and classes with over 175 students will be held in hybrid rooms, or offered remotely.

Wear a face covering when required

  • Laurentian is continuing to require face coverings when indoors and when a 2 meter distance cannot be maintained.
  • Disposable face masks will be made available.

Cleaning and Preventative Measures

  • Laurentian is continuing with enhanced cleaning throughout campus and making cleaning supplies available in labs and shared office spaces.
  • Teaching spaces, public spaces and high-touch areas will be cleaned routinely and at least daily.
  • Facilities Management has implemented a thorough approach to ventilation (HVAC) operation and maintenance that is aligned with industry best practices and public health guidelines. Adjustments have been made to increase ventilation rates and reduce recirculated air by increasing outdoor air. Industry- standard filters have been installed and will be changed regularly.
  • The University will continue to promote the importance of handwashing and hygiene protocols with extra hand sanitizing stations, signage and communication campaigns.

Screening for COVID-19

  • Laurentian is screening for COVID-19:
    • Active screening for all Laurentian employees (questionnaire is available on the SecurLU-UL app and the LU website)
    • Passive screening for all students (signs are on doors to campus buildings and classrooms)
    • Wastewater testing in residence to identify early signs of a potential COVID outbreak
  • Laurentian is supporting COVID-19 testing on campus at the LU Health Clinic.
    • Rapid testing is available to any faculty, staff, or student
    • ○    PCR testing is available
  • Laurentian is a designated learning centre to support the arrival of international students.
    • Quarantine, tests, and vaccinations can be arranged if required

Preventing COVID-19 will continue to be a community effort. If you are able to do so, we strongly encourage you to make it a 2-dose summer and get fully vaccinated before you return to campus.

People are also encouraged to visit the PHSD website for up to date information on COVID-19 in Sudbury and districts.
